Diary Entries April 1978

1st April 1978

Steven Earl's Birthday (brother of my friend round the corner). April Fool's Day. Got up at 9am. Watched Grand National, Lucias won 16-1. Red Rum retired. Also film (War, 1968), Robert Mitcham & Kojak. Bed 10.30am.

2nd April 1978

Got up at 9.40am. Went out to play Ball-tig & football with Uncle Phil on my side against the rest of the boys. Also played in alleys but Mas & El went in. Watched Hospital film. Bed 9.30pm.

3rd April 1978

Sharon Earl's birthday (friend round the corner). Got up at 9.20am. Played with Sharon at football and went after Danny in alleys (caught him). Watched Devenish & World in Action. Bed 9.30pm.

4th April 1978

Got up at 1020am. Went outside but Ruth came while I was playing with Sharon. They went to Stanley Park. Watched The Rockford Files and new series of Rising Damp, missed Armchair Thriller. Had bath & bed at 9pm

NB: RUTH AND SHARON BUGGERING OFF AND LEAVING ME ON MY OWN WAS A REGULAR OCCURENCE WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, WHICH IS PROBABLY WHY I TRUST MEN MORE THAN WOMEN NOW.

5th April 1978

Got up at 8.30am. Played with Sharon (Ruth didn't interfere this time). After tea played out after Uncle Joe went & came in to watch Miss England 1978. I picked winner (No.2). Bed 9.20pm.

6th April 1978

Got up at 10am. Went outside to play about with my Avon Nail Enamel 'Rambling Rose' also got free perfume called 'Unspoken.' Watched Top of the Pops & Wildlife On One about Blue Tits & Great Tits. Also there was What's On Next. Bed 9.30pm.

7th April 1978

Got up at 1045am. Went out to play with my balls. Uncle Joe came & got some petrol for car. Watched Selwyn Froggit, Wonderful World of Disney (Donald Duck), This Is Your Life and last one of Going Straight. Bed 10.10pm.

8th April 1978

Got up at 8am. Watched Tiswas (not as good as Swap Shop). Went to Town in Joe's car with Mum & Dad. I actually got a sports bag from the Cheaper Market (black with white on it). Watched Kojak with Tele Sevalas. Also Match of the Day. Bed 1015pm.

9th April 1978

Got up at 9am. Went outside after dinner to play with Sharon & her new ball (I might get one) until Sharon went in because of rain. Watched The Muppet Show, Pru Bailey was the guest. Watched Nearest & Dearest comedy film (1972). Had bath, then bed at 9.30pm.

10th April 1978

Back to School (boo!) Started school at 9.30am though. Snowed until break & it was too cold to play out because it was damp on the ground. Watched television for a bit. Bed 9.30pm.

11th April 1978

Got up early, 715pm. Mr Dempsey is back for Physics. Didn't play out (cold). Watched Bionic Woman & Rising Damp (had man who was religious). New Armchair Thriller about a starved Nun. Bed 9pm.

12th April 1978

Had lovely dinner at school, ham with roaster & tart with lemon curd & jam in it (gorgeous)! Had Biology homework. Played out til 8pm & then watched Benny Hill Show. New Series, he was in Australia. Bed 9.10pm.

13th April 1978

Up later because Alarm wasn't set. Snowed all morning. Did Cooking and made 11 rock buns (LOVELY). Played out, watched Top of the Pops, Matchstalk Men No.1. Also Wildlife on 1 about badgers & Armchair Thriller. Also What's On Next? Bed 9.30pm.

14th April 1978

Got up at 9am. Watched bit of Tiswas. Played out all day (sunny). Baked marmalade tarts. Watched Kojak about a boy who was set up to kill, he got shot but he didn't die. Other guy got arrested. Bed 1020pm.

15th April 1978

Played only 10mins of tennis at school. Had all the 3 subjects for homework. Played out at home. Watched It's A Knockout in Blackpool Tower & Pot Black '78, Doug Mountjoy won. Bed 1010pm.

16th April 1978

Got up at 1015am. Played out with Sharonon our bikes. Had a bath in Miriam's (next door) & washed my hair. Also played badminton with small bats. Watched film 'The Killer Who Wouldn't Die' (1976). Bed 9.30pm.

17th April 1978

Did tennis at school (only had 10mins). Had Geography, French & Maths homework. Played with Sharon at badminton & tennis. Watched Whodunnitt? & Angels. Also World in Action, 2nd part. Bed 9.30pm.

18th April 1978

Bad time at school (rubbish lessons). After homework played with Sharon near railway. Watched Bionic Woman with Evel Kneivel. Also Rising Damp & Quiet As A Nun (Armchair Thriller). Bed 9.20pm. Did poem about loneliness in bed. :-(

19th April 1978

Boring day at school. After my homework played with Sharon (Badminton). Watched football, England v Brazil. They were dirty players (Brazil). Ref should've given us a pen. Ended up a 1-1 draw. Bed 9.45pm.

20th April 1978

Did Cookery at school. Made 10 scones (nice). After homework played with Sharon. Watched Top of the Pops & Wildlife on One (herons). Also watched Armchair Thriller 'Quiet As A Nun.' Can't figure out who murdered (starved) the Nun in the Tower. Bed 9.30pm.

21st April 1978

After homework played badminton & on bikes with Sharon. Went in at 8pm to watch It's A Knockout (new series). Bath, the home team, won. On for an hour (3 teams). Bed 9.15pm.

22nd April 1978

Got up at 9am. Watched bit of Tiswas. Played out all day with Sharon & got a football. Watched Eurovision Song Contest. UK came nowhere (Co-Co) Ireland gave us 3 points. Israel won it easily (1st time). Bed 1115pm.

23rd April 1978

Got up at 9.30am. Sharon & Steven went to Stanley Park with Net Badminton Set. At 5pm went to Carleton Pool with Big Phil, Philip, Paul, Miriam, Josy, Dave & Tony (all neighbours). Played out & went to see the trams nearby. Bed 9.40pm.

24th April 1978

Played tennis at Stanley Park with the school. Had to borrow teacher's tennis racket. Played out with Sharon til Whodunnit was on. Couldn't find who did it again! Also watched Angels. 1st year student nurses. Bed 9.10pm. Revised Physics.

25th April 1978

Not very good at school. Cold & windy. Had English, Geography & Physics homework. Played with Sharon after Bionic Woman. I washed my hair in the bath with new shower head. Also watched Armchair Thriller 'Quiet As A Nun' (frightening ending)! Bed 9pm.

26th April 1978

Another cold day. Played out with Sharon after I did homework. Went in at 7pm to watch film 'Earth II' (1971) & The Liver Birds & Call My Bluff. Also watched a bit of The Hong Kong Beat. Bed at 10.10pm.

27th April 1978

Didn't do cookery because I forgot to copy recipe. Going to have a D.T next Tuesday. After I played out I watched Top of the Pops Bee Gees No.1. Also Wildlife on One (zebras) & last one of 'Quiet As A Nun' (Scarbec murdered sister Miriam but he got killed in a Nun's mini with another bad Nun). Bed 9.30pm.

28th April 1978

Did tennis at school. Had just English homework. Played with Sharon. Steve saw Tony Lloyd in Gramby Avenue but me & Sharon couldn't find him. Watched It's a Knockout, The Bumbles & The Chumps were in it. Bed 9.30pm.

29th April 1978

Got up at 9.30am. Called for Sharon & we played badminton all morning. Went to Derby Baths (in 16ft end)! Lost rubber rings to goggles. After that I played football & watched Kojak (which was good). Football (last game of the season). Bed 1045pm.

30th April 1978

Got up at 10am. Rained all morning so I couldn't play out. Hedgehog in our back garden. After dinner played out until a film came on called 'Agony in Ecstasy' (1965) about a Roman Architect who painted a church ceiling 'The Popes' in 2 years. Had bath & washed hair. Bed 8.15pm to dry hair.
